The conference site is most easily accessed by car. The maps shown
below may help you to find Tihany in Hungary and the Hotel in Tihany.
These are downloadable gif files, can be enlarged and/or printed out.
In the last map -- showing Tihany village --
number 10 within a red circle indicates our Hotel, named "Kastély
and Park Hotel".
BY CAR
Note that there is a highway toll in Hungary. There are tickets valid
for 4 days, 10 days, one month or a year. The 4 days' ticket costs
about 1300 HUF (less than 6 Eur).
Entering Hungary at Hegyeshalom (from Wien) or Rajka (from Bratislava)
Follow highway M1, the exit towards
Veszprém, Road No 82 is at about km 120. Last week there was
a 5-km long road construction with two-way traffic between km 126
and 121. From here see instructions 'Veszprém-Balatonfüred',
then 'Balatonfüred-Tihany'.
Entering Hungary at Parassapuszta/Sahy or Esztergom/Sturovo
Follow route No. 2 (E77) from Parassapuszta, or route 10 or 11
from Esztergom up to Budapest. Find highway
M7, direction South-West to Székesfehérvár, Balaton.
After getting out of Budapest there are
several gas stations where you can buy the highway sticker (called
"matrica").
Follow the highway till km 89, exit there (Balatonfüred is
signposted), follow route
No. 71 towards
Balatonfüred/Keszthely. Drive across the city.
From here see instructions 'Balatonfüred-Tihany'.
Veszprém-Balatonfüred
If you managed to arrive at Veszprém, try to find the road
that goes around the city (the direction initially is marked as
Road No 8, Körmend), and turn left off the loop towards
Csopak/Balatonfüred,
Road No. 73 at one of several intersections with traffic lights
(probably the
second). Road No 73 leads to Road No 71 at Csopak, turn left there, and
drive
across Balatonfüred, from here see instructions
'Balatonfüred-Tihany'.
Balatonfüred-Tihany
After getting out of Balatonfüred you pass a round-about, the road
approaches the lake, and after about 1 km there is the first major road
junction, at the neck of the peninsula. The road sign is very poorly seen
behind branches of trees. Turn left there towards Tihanyrév.
The road follows the beautiful lakeshore, leaves the village of Gödre.
After
about 1 km drive in the woods you approach the port and marina of Tihany.
From here drive slowly, because the hotel entrance is easy to miss.
After passing a bridge with a green railing (Fig 1) the road makes a
quite sharp right turn (Fig. 2), and after a hundred meters to the left
(Fig.3). The hotel entrance is exactly at the bend on the left (Fig. 4.,
a car is
just getting out from the entrance).
You can notice that you missed it when you see a major junction seen
on Figs 5-6. You can make a U-turn there.
BY TRAIN AND BUS
The most convenient train connection is through
Budapest. Take the line Budapest-Tapolca at the southern railway station
"Déli pályaudvar" and get off at Balatonfüred.
At the train station, you'll find buses operating frequently between
Balatonfüred
and Tihany. Get off the bus at the stop Tihany port "Tihany
hajóállomás".
The Hotel is at walking distance from the port.
The port is indicated by number 8 in a red circle on the village map.
Please note that the quality of most trains in Hungary is below
the european standard.
Alternatively, you may reach the city of Veszprém or
Gyôr by train.
Either form Veszprém or Gyôr there are direct buses
taking you to
Balatonfüred. The Veszprém lines are operating frequently,
but only
a few buses are available from Gyôr within one day. You should
change again at Balatonfüred, as explained above.
Should you arrive at Balatonfüred late in the evening, when no
bus connection is available to Tihany, you can hire a taxi to
give you a lift to the "Kastély and Park Hotel, Tihany". The ride
is cca. 8 km and should cost between 3000 and 5000 Hungarian Forints.
In the worst case, you can send a note to the organizers and someone
can pick you up at the Balatonfüred station.
